Our club was formed in 1991/92 by some horse riders drinking at the River Royal Inn Morpeth, wishing to organise rides somewhere. They chose to ride from Morpeth to Gresford. The ride was organised and a band of riders headed off on a 2 day ride with basic supplies (swag, some food and beer). Having done that with little drama, more people came on board. Along with that came some rules, which meant forming a club, so a committee was formed and organised rides started. The Morpeth Medicine Ride started within the club as a way to raise money for cancer and became a yearly event raising thousands of dollars for kids with cancer and Riding for the Disabled at Raymond Terrace. The format for the ride was a starting point about 20km from Morpeth, finishing with a parade down the main street of Morpeth, with horses numbering in the hundreds. It really was the place to be, to see huge crowds cheer the horses and riders on. Many thanks to the riders and many non-riders for their hard work in making this event a success every year and it always finished with a band, food and beer – quite the night! The Morpeth Medicine Ride started in 1993 and finished in 2006. We believe the rides raised over $200,000 which was not possible without sponsors and volunteers.
The club has grown and changed but always caters for a wide range of riders – from beginners on their first ride to someone with hundreds of rides under their belt, we want to go out and enjoy what horse riding brings, to connect with our horses and fellow riders because it can be life changing. We are proud that after all these years we continue to provide a safe and friendly place to learn and grow with our horses, and make new friends.
